Filipino American History Month Celebration
Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated annually in October to honor the rich heritage, culture, and contributions of Filipino Americans in the United States. This tradition commemorates the arrival of the first Filipinos in what is now Morro Bay, California, on October 18, 1587. These early settlers, known as Luzones Indios, were primarily Filipino sailors who served as laborers on Spanish ships during the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade.
Since its official recognition by Congress in 2009, Filipino American History Month has become a time to reflect on the significant impact that Filipino Americans have had on the fabric of American society. This year, the celebration will be hosted by the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) Region 5 at the History Colorado Center in Denver, marking a special moment for the Filipino American community in Colorado.
This will be a day filled with vibrant cultural displays, including traditional dance performances, film screenings, and various presentations that showcase the history and achievements of Filipino Americans. Attendees can also explore a diverse array of over 40 vendors, offering everything from authentic Filipino cuisine to cultural artifacts.
In addition to the cultural presentations, the event will feature contributions from key Filipino American organizations in Colorado, including:
Crosswind Church
Filipino American Community of Colorado (FACC)
Filipino American Community of Southern Colorado (FACSC)
National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) Region 5
Philippine American Society of Colorado (PASCO)
One Fil-Am Market (OFAM)
The Filipino Church (TFC)
The day promises to be an enriching experience for all, providing a platform to learn more about the Filipino American experience and celebrate the community’s enduring legacy in the United States. Join us in this grand celebration of history, culture, and unity at the Filipino American History Month Celebration!
